  • RESEARCH FIELD- 원격탐사 및 인공지능 기술을 활용한 지구 물순환 연구 Climate change and human activities are increasing uncertainties in water resource management and natural disaster predictions. At our Hydro AI Lab, we use remote sensing, land surface models, and AI/machine learning to investigate the complex interactions between land surfaces and the atmosphere in response to climate change. Our goal is to improve the precision of natural disaster predictions and water resource management. We achieve this through the generation of new remote sensing datasets and algorithms, enhancement of surface models, and utilization of high-performance computing for global-scale land surface modeling. Machine Learning (Shallow Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Bayesian Machine Learning) Satellite Remote Sensing (Microwave, GNSS) Land Surface Models (Parallel Computing with HPC) Data Assimilation (Ensemble Kalman Filter, Particle Filter) Global Water Cycle, Water Balance Model (MCMC Sampling Approach) Land-atmosphere Interaction (Land Information System from NASA) Impact of Human Activities on Earth System Uncertainty Analysis (Bayesian Inference, Triple Collocation Analysis)

  • RESEARCH FIELD- 대기오염물질 측정 기술 개발 및 멀티-플랫폼 활용 거동 특성 파악 Our research goals in ATMOS Lab are geared toward improving our understanding of regional and global tropospheric oxidation chemistry, and its relation to air quality and climate. Field measurements of trace molecules in the air, laboratory process studies, and simple computational modeling can help us to unravel important contemporary issues such as ozone, particle pollution and climate change. Specifically, we are interested in nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbon oxidation processes that results in organic aerosol formation. We are thus interested in developing field deployable detection methods for atmospheric trace molecule based on spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric techniques.

Based on the crystallographic knowledge with X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy at the synchrotron, we aim to theoretically and experimentally investigate the crystal structures, phase transitions, and physical properties of materials under extreme conditions. Through the experimental study of Earth materials under extreme conditions, we intend to conduct the study of extreme condition science to involve multidisciplinary fields, such as earth sciences, environmental engineering, and energy sciences.

  • RESEARCH FIELD- 해양의 생물·자원·생태계에 대한 기후변화 영향 연구 Stable isotope ecology laboratory (SIEL) is a group of research scientists, graduates, and undergraduates who are in POSTI (Postech Ocean Science and Technology Institute) and SEE (School of environmental science and engineering) of Postech (Pohang University of Science and Technology). Our academic mission is to elucidate survival and adaptation strategy of marine biota and structure and function of marine ecosystem in changing environment by natural or anthropogenic forcing. We understand energy flux and material cycle through marine biological network by observing trophic ecology and physiology of marine individual, community and ecosystem. We use biogeochemical, biochemical, histological, and statistical tools to cover a wide range of biological organization and diverse types of coastal ecosystem. Here are our primary ecological themes of the laboratory: (1) trophic relationship linking primary producer to top predator in coastal habitat such as muddy tidal flat, estuaries, or sandy beach; (2) correlation between seasonal and spatial variability of biogeochemical composition of particulate matter or phytoplankton and their trophic contribution to macrozoobenthic food web by using bulk and stable isotope analysis; (3) an annual fluctuation of biochemical composition of mollusk and how the fluctuation is affected by physical or chemical environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, or organic and inorganic nutrient concentration; (4) an annual cycle of growth and reproduction of marine individual organism, especially mollusk, and estimate its biological energy budget in terms of scope for growth (SFG); and (5) seasonal or spatial variation in primary production by stratification and creation of mixed layers in the East Sea.

  • RESEARCH FIELD- 촉매전기화학과 화학공정 기반 화학에너지의 생산/전환/활용 Research concentrates on the structure, dynamics and reactivity of surfaces and/or interfaces of mainly nanoparticles/wires/tubes in contact with gaseous or liquid phases, but also including thin layers, clusters, as well as 'real' catalysts. We are trying to apply our experience in chemical engineering and basic understanding of electrochemistry and physical chemistry to the development and optimization of a number of processes involving ELECTROCATALYSIS (for (a) HYDROGEN generation, (b) OXYGEN & CO2 reduction, (c) liquid fuel oxidation) and electrochemical power production, in particular for construction of PORTABLE FUEL CELLS & Semiconductor - Air Batteries.
