Assistant Professor of Environmental & Sustainable Engineering at University at Albany and State University of New York (SUNY). Conducting research to realize carbon neutrality in the future and solve the problem of clean water and energy depletion on Earth through environmental engineering. Also, striving to cultivate talented people who fit the new trend of environmental engineering.

At the time of my admission (and now), the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering at GIST was conducting research in a variety of new environmental engineering fields that were incomparable to other universities. This environment has helped me think about my research area from different perspectives through interactions with other laboratories and is still helping me get a sense of new areas. The department's research-related infrastructure (facilities, equipment, devices, etc.) and accessibility have been at the highest level, and the experience I had has been a great help in carrying out various research tasks even after graduation.

Although it’s inconvenient, we can survive without a smartphone. However, without clean water and the Earth, we cannot survive. It is said that people do not value what they have until it is gone. If you do not realize the importance of the environment now, it will be too late to regret it at a later date. Although environmental engineering is not flashy, I want you to remember that it is currently the most precious science to mankind and to take pride in it to fulfill your dreams as a member of the School of Earth Science and Environmental Engineering at GIST.

Researcher at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Conducting research about Geological Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel (DGRs). DGRs is a technology that safely isolates spent nuclear fuel used in nuclear power generation within a rock 500m underground. I am studying the migration characteristics of radioactive nuclides that are most closely related to disposal safety.

Looking back, I think the curriculum of the School of Earth Science and Environmental Engineering at GIST was well organized and consisted of content needed for real-life practice. What I learned from environmental chemistry, nanochemistry, and device analysis was very helpful in conducting the current research on the mobility of radionuclides. Not only your major classes, but also English presentations and thesis writing methods learned through Capacity Building classes were also very helpful in conducting research.

After graduating and entering society, I feel that the graduates of the GIST School of Earth Science and Environmental Engineering not only have sufficient competitiveness in each field, but are leading the way. Graduate school life is tough, but I think you'll be able to achieve your goals if you work hard with your professors and enjoy your research.

Researcher at the Center for Water Cycle Research of the Climate and Environmental Research Institute, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Conducting research to recover clean resources efficiently (water, energy, oil resources, etc.) from discarded water or seawater.

When I first learned about the research topic of seawater desalination I was very interested in it leading me to conduct research on it. By taking related courses, I acquired background knowledge and was able to successfully conduct related research using state-of-the-art equipment. Thanks to this experience, I was able to go to the U.S. to further expand upon my studies after completing my Ph.D. In retrospect, I would be living my life completely different without the great research experience and dedicated guidance I’ve experienced at GIST.

Now, I think that spending time at graduate school is like finding answers in an unknown area, so my mood was easily influenced by the progress of my research. You struggle with research results day by day, but achieving good results does not come easily, it also takes a long time to complete a study. In my case, it was helpful to be a little kinder to myself rather than pushing myself by identifying myself with the research outcomes. Trust yourself and take one step forward at a time. I hope that you will achieve your dreams!

Working at Netmarble Corp. Conducting ESG management (establishing and implementing ESG strategies, responding to ESG evaluations, publishing ESG reports, etc.).
  • A답변
I focused on studying climate change in the School of Earth Science and Environmental Engineering. At that time, understanding the latest trends related to climate change and accumulating basic knowledge was helpful in understanding and carrying out the environmental field corresponding to “E” of ESG work. It was especially helpful in carrying out the 'Carbon Neutral Consulting' project among several projects where I promoted ESG consulting at my previous workplace, an accounting firm. I was able to increase my understanding of carbon neutrality based on the knowledge I had accumulated while taking environmental engineering classes at the School of Earth Science and Environmental Engineering. It also helped me to have less difficulties in utilizing and analyzing environmental data, such as estimating future carbon emissions through various data analysis capabilities acquired while conducting climate data analysis.

At first, I also thought that the environment task within the company had only jobs that actually use environmental technology and work in that field. However, there are a lot of different jobs within the company, more than I thought, and I think there are many jobs that can be challenging if you have a background in environmental engineering. Since interest in the environment has increased recently, I think that those who are well aware of environmental trends through thesis research or lectures will be able to build a good career. Although it does not only deal with the environmental field, many companies are recruiting candidates for specialized jobs in each field, especially for ESG-related work, which has been in the spotlight recently. If you are interested in carbon neutrality, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, or establishment of environmental strategies, you may want to try it.
